Lumbar Five is also a group of musicians based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, of all places. They bring a wealth of experiences and talents to the band, making music that is both unique and somehow familiar. Soulful vocals, soaring guitar, a percolating bassline, and the interesting combination of a jazz/rock drummer paired with an out-of-this world percussionist from West Africa --- Lumbar Five a band unlike any other. Kathy Veazey leads the troupe, writing great songs with well-crafted lyrics, singing like nobody's business, and playing keyboard, guitar, and slide in a style totally her own. John Rawlston's lead guitar meshes with Kathy's music and takes the band to new heights. John writes a few songs, too, and he occasionally plays the electrified mandolin and other stuff. Nick Honerkamp has played bass in bands with John for so long that he sometimes knows what John will do next. John and Nick sing lead vocals, too, and harmonize with Kathy. Jo Whitaker is a rock drummer who has been a member of everything from jazz combos to progressive rock bands, to name just two. Kofi Mawuko has been a professional percussionist since he was a young boy in Ghana, and he can take over the show at a moment's notice. Just as the Lumbar Five is a mixture of styles, the members of the band are an interesting mixture of people. Hmmm, maybe there's a cause-and-effect thing going on here. OGYA is a world music band founded by Kofi Mawuko. The members include four musicians from Ghana, West Africa and several musicians from the U.S. including Tommy Cotter on guitar and Demarland on drum kit. Also with us are an excellent horn section and dancers.
OGYA plays original music, including African High Life, Reggae, Funk-Rock, Fusion, traditional African tunes plus Tommy Cotter's tunes and even a few Musical Moose tunes arranged "African-Funk-Rock" style. Shake & Bake anyone?
Kofi Mawuko is a master percussionist, singer, songwriter as well as being a consumate entertainer. The other members of the band are excellent performers and are among the best anywhere.

The title of Butch Ross’ new CD, “A Long Way From Shady Grove” is a fair summation of his approach to the traditional folk tunes he plays on that most traditional instrument, the mountain dulcimer. If you have ever seen Butch play down under the bridge near the aquarium you know what I mean. Many of the tunes he plays are traditional folk tunes, but just as he does on the album, when he plays them he often adds the kind of electronic effects utilized by DJ’s like DJ Shadow, one of his heroes. He’s essentially a one man band, but unlike the old one-man bands with their Rube Goldberg-ish contraptions that allowed them to play guitar and harmonica along with a drum they carried on their back, Butch carries the other instruments in a tape machine he operates with a series of pedals at his feet. He plays the dulcimer in real time while a pre-recorded guitar plays a counterpoint and a pre-recorded drum track brings the ancient tunes solidly into the 21st century.
But Butch being Butch he also likes to throw in a few curves and everybody who has seen him knows to expect the unexpected in his choice of material. In the middle of a set of centuries old Scots and Irish tunes he’ll suddenly launch into a song by The Beatles or Lynyrd Skynyrd. His take on “Eleanor Rigby” has him tapping on the strings like Leo Kottke re-inventing The Beatles’ classic in the same way he re-invents “Shady Grove.” In coming a long way from Shady Grove he has, in fact, come full circle bringing fresh energy to well-worn tunes bringing them back to life and catching the ear of a whole new audience.
