A Go-Kart from the Man Cave

Triking with the Birds

If you've driven on I-24 West lately, around NickaJack Lake, you may have seen a strange aircraft in the sky. Is it something that looks like a flying go-kart or a pontoon boat with hang glider wings? Well, you're not dreaming.

The official name for the aircraft is a Krucker Cygnet, also known as a trike. WUTC's Garrett Crowe speaks and flies with trike pilot Erik Graper about the aircraft.

Along with plastic, aluminum, tin, and paper, the Community Kitchen also recycles scrap metal, clothing, and house appliances.

A Question of Sovereignty

Chattanooga History Center's Cherokee Life and Struggle

In June, the Chattanooga History Center will present two programs about Cherokee culture. One of the programs will be aimed towards a younger audience called Cherokee Life, which happens June 9th at 9 AM. The other program is for adults and is called The Cherokee Struggle for Sovereignty. For a living, Eddie Bridges is a bartender at JJs Bohemia. But outside of his job, Eddie likes to focus on what he calls "projects." These projects are usually born from an incredible act of inspiration. In the past, Eddie's been involved in creative carpentry, pumpkin carving, and interior design. But his current project, the most absurd of them all, involves a couch, Tempur-Pedic memory foam, and Facebook.

MakeWork's Inaugural 10x10 Artist Showcase Starts April 13th

From April 13th to the 22nd, MakeWork will present the 10x10 Artist Showcase in Chattanooga as a part of the first annual Hatch Festival. According to MakeWork's Web site, the festival is hosting a "a 10 -day exhibition of 100 creative works. Streets, parking lots, parks, and abandoned buildings will become a medium to construct, innovate, and celebrate creativity." MakeWork's 10x10 will have showcases at Walnut Street Bridge, Ross' Landing, and Miller Plaza.

Local Homeless Art Exhibit at Chatt State Library

From now until April 13th, you can visit the Augusta R. Kolwyck Library at Chattanooga State Community College and view a local homeless art exhibit. It features charcoal and oil portraits, fine knitting, and hand-made jewelry. The exhibit comes from Hart Gallery Tennessee, a local nonprofit gallery dedicated to homeless and non-traditional artists.

Jay Reatard Documentary Coming to Chattanooga

On Saturday, March 24th, the Mise En Scenesters Film Club will be screening the documentary Better than Something at Collective Clothing Warehouse. The film's subject is Memphis musician Jay Reatard who tragically passed away in 2010.

The directors of Better than Something, Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz, talk about the film. Chris Dortch and Zach Zacharias, the co-founders of the Mise En Scenesters, also discuss what makes Jay Reatard's music unique.

SYNONYM Art Project

Local Artist Awarded Creative Capital Grant

Phillip Lewis is a UTC professor in the Art Department. He teaches courses in photography and video. Recently, he was awarded the Creative Capital Grant for his ongoing SYNONYM art project. According to Lewis, SYNONYM will explore an experimental drug rehabilitation program that appeared in the United States during the 1980s and 90s. Phillip Lewis talked to WUTC about his upcoming project and being awarded the Creative Capital Grant.

Jamie Quatro is a fiction writer who lives on Lookout Mountain. Her first book of short-stories will be published by Grove/Atlantic in 2013. Ott finds mugshots taken in Hamilton County, Tennessee, and he renders the photographs into colorful comic-book styled portraits.  He stopped by our studios recently and discussed what inspired him to start using mugshots as the basis for fine art.  He calls his project Chattanooga Mugshots.
