Free UTC Jazz Band Concert Coming Up 11/13

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Music Department will present UTC’sJazz Band, showcasing a variety of jazz styles from composers Quincy Jones,  Thelonious Monk,  Cootie Williams and others.  Guest vocalists Amy Oaks and Alea Tveit will also perform with The Jazz Band on Wednesday,  November 13th at 7:30 PM.

The UTC Music Department is pleased to present Jazz Band, directed by Erika Schafer, and featuring guest vocalists Amy Elizabeth Oaks and Alea Tveit. The concert will take place in the UTC Fine Arts Center, Roland Hayes Concert Hall, 752 Vine St., Chattanooga, on Wednesday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m., and will showcase a variety of styles from some of music’s master musicians including: Jimmy McHugh, Ted Koehler, Harold Arlen, Arturo Sandoval, Quincy Jones, Richard Rodgers, Thelonious Monk, and Cootie Williams. Admission is free.
 

This recital showcases jazz at its best as you listen to such works as “Pedal Point Blues” by Charles Mingus, “Belly Roll (The Boy in the Tree)” by Quincy Jones, “Bewitched” by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers, “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” by Ted Koehler and Harold Arlen, and “That Old Black Magic” by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen. If you love jazz, then this is one concert you do not want to miss!

Featured guest vocalists are Amy Elizabeth Oaks and Alea Tveit. The Rhythm section is made up of Michael Pagan, Cameron Perkins, Dustin Smoote, Adam Stone, and Robert Crabtree. Nick Wyson plays lead Trumpet, and is joined by Trevor Hayes, April Carrillo, and Zachary Langley. Ryan Springer plays lead Trombone, and is joined by Daylen Brown, Alvin Rosamond, and Tyler Queen on tuba. Saxes are: Blake Bowling, Caroline Crawford, DeAndre Mercer, Samuel Wagnon, and Venson Eddins.

Previously featured soloist of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C., Dr. Erika L. Schafer is now in her sixth year as Trumpet Instructor and Assistant Director of Bands at UTC. She teaches trumpet lessons, directs the Jazz Band and Trumpet Ensemble, and is the Assistant Director of the Marching Band and Pep Band. She also performs regularly with the Chattanooga Symphony and the UTC Faculty Brass Quintet and, is a founding member of New Dischord, a Chattanooga-based performing ensemble featuring new music in collaboration with other artists.
