Last week, as the world prepared to observe International Holocaust Remembrance Day, word came of a recent decision here in Southeast Tennessee about a book used for decades to teach students about the Holocaust.

The McMinn County School Board voted unanimously in the first half of January to remove the graphic novel Maus - by Art Spiegelman - from its curriculum, citing objections to words and graphics in the book and opting for a yet-to-be-specified alternative.

Reaction to the board’s decision has been critical - while sales of the book have soared, nationwide and worldwide.

Yesterday, I spoke with Michael Dzik, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga.
