This year, Chambliss Center for Children celebrates 150 years of serving children here in the Chattanooga area.

Founded in 1872, the nonprofit agency describes its mission today as - quote: “...to preserve family unity - and to help prevent the dependency, neglect, abuse, and delinquency of children by responding to the community's child care needs.”

Chambliss provides early childhood education and child care to children ages six-weeks through 12 years old - and residential care for children removed from their homes and now in the custody of the State of Tennessee.

Here on “Scenic Roots,” we begin a series of conversations throughout this year on the story of Chambliss.

In this first conversation, we focus on the role of women in the establishment, growth - and future - of the agency.

Katie Harbison is president and CEO of Chambliss - and Julie Stowe chairs its board.
