U.S. Open Cup Match Kicks Off Chattanooga Football Club's New Season

Chattanooga Football Club's men's soccer team is preparing for the first game of its fifth season on Saturday, May 17th in Finley Stadium. But before they play their first game, they are playing the Wilmington Hammerheads in the U.S. Open Cup on May 14th. It’s a knockout competition open to all the soccer teams in the country. If Chattanooga F.C. wins this game, they will go on to compete against better-funded professional teams until they lose a game—or win the championship. As unlikely as that may be, Chattanooga F.C. has big dreams, and according to Tim Kelly, a board member, they had a near miss in 2011 that was only the beginning. That year, they played the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and lost only after the game went into overtime.

Richard Winham joined WUTC five years after the station began broadcasting to the Chattanooga area and the Tennessee Valley.
