Chattanooga Library Hosts Zinefest On Saturday, May 10

WUTC's Michael Edward Miller discusses the upcomingZinefest event with Mary Barnett from the Chattanooga Public Library andAggie Toppins, an assistant professor of art and graphic design at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga who creates her own zines.

Zines are independently-published books and magazines.  Here's how the event's Web sitedefines zines:

Zines can be about anything. They come in a variety of genres, including: perzines (personal journals and oral histories), fanzines (with topics that vary from pop culture to anime to sports), collections or taxonomies, politics, journalism, art and design, comics, literature, poetry, cooking, travel, music, etc. You can make a zine about your best friend’s cat. Zines can look edgy and raw, hand-drawn or fresh from the copy machine. Zines can also be sophisticated and interpretative, like a piece of abstract art. The best part about zines is that all kinds of people make them. There’s something powerful about seeing a shelf full of zines from people all over the world, from different walks of life.

Zinefest is coming up Saturday, May 10th from 10 a.m. til 5 p.m. on the library's 4th floor.  The library currently has hundreds of zines in its collection, and vendors will be at the event, selling zines and merchandise.
