Charles H. Coolidge was the last living recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor from the European theater in World War II - and he was the only one to receive the medal during the war.
Last week, Coolidge - born and raised on Signal Mountain - died at the age of 99. Services are set for tomorrow at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga.
Two years ago, Linda Moss Mines - the Chattanooga and Hamilton County historian told his story here on “Scenic Roots.”
Linda is also vice president for education at the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center here in Chattanooga, which honors his legacy.
Last month, before Coolidge’s death, I spoke with Linda about “The Making of A Hero: Six Stories of the Medal of Honor” - a children’s picture book she wrote about six Americans, all with ties to Tennessee, who were also awarded the Medal of Honor.
