The Silverdale Neighborhood Association in Chattanooga holds a meeting at Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

At one time, there used to be 150 neighborhood associations across the City of Chattanooga.

But because many groups were run by an aging demographic - and because of disruption due to the pandemic - only about 70 of those groups remain now.

Perrin Lance, the City’s neighborhood services manager, sees the associations as an important tool for civic engagement - and he’s trying to boost the number of associations.

Nathan Bird interviewed Perrin for his podcast Chattanooga Civics, available wherever you get your podcasts.

Mary Helen Montgomery of Chattamattters edited the interview for WUTC.
