Attorneys for the University of Tennessee and Justin Gilbert of Gilbert McWherter Scott & Bobbitt, PLC, attorneys for a former employee of UT Chattanooga’s WUTC-FM, have reached a settlement of $50,000 in a lawsuit filed by Jacqui Helbert in response to her dismissal from the radio station.

“I am satisfied with the settlement and look forward to the next chapter of my life. I harbor no ill will toward WUTC, UTC, or anyone associated with them,” said Helbert, who was dismissed from her position on March 21.

WUTC's Richard Winham Celebrates 30 Years on the Air

Nov 3, 2017

London native Richard Winham hosts WUTC’s afternoon music program each weekday from 2 to 4 pm. October marked a special anniversary: 30 years on the air with us, playing a mix of national and local artists. He frequently invites local artists to perform live on his show, and some of them say he launced their careers. In this story, we hear how some of those artists paid tribute with a musical celebration at Barking Legs Theater.

SPECIAL NOTE FROM WUTC 88.1 FM: At WUTC, we’re thinking of the people and animals in need in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. If you want to help and you’re able to give, the quickest way is to support a charity close to most-affected areas. CharityNavigator maintains an online list of highly-rated, local charities and can help you make an informed decision about your support.

WUTC's Spring Membership Drive continues today, and when you donate, you could win an invite to a VIP meet-and-greet Friday with Paula Poundstone. She's performing at Track 29 in Chattanooga. Tune in to 88.1 for details.

The University of Tennessee Chattanooga has said the decision to terminate the employment of reporter Jacqui Helbert was made by university officials, not the news editors at WUTC. The station's news staff says the decision to remove from WUTC's website the story that Helbert had done about meetings held by state legislators with students from a Gay-Straight Alliance Club was also made by university officials, not WUTC's editors.

The staff of WUTC wishes you and yours happy holiday cheer this season, and we’ll be spreading good tidings Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning.

Although he was supposed to be running the main studio, WUTC announcer Craig Nelson took a break to call into Whad'ya Know during the show's final broadcast, becoming the last contestant on Michael Feldman's radio quiz show.

"I'm tying up the office phone right now!" Craig said exuberantly. (Listen to the clip above to find out what Craig won...)
