Nearly 40 years ago, Moccasin Bend was designated a National Historic Landmark - to date, the only one here in Hamilton County.

In 2003, Federal legislation created the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District, adding the Bend to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

Fast forward to this past fall, when the Tennessee State Building Commission authorized the construction of a new mental health institute on the Bend- to replace the building on the Bend since the early 1960’s.

Next week, a public forum will be held on the past, present and future of the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District - Thursday, April 11th from 5 PM to 7 PM in the Skyline Loft at Ruby Falls.

Tricia Mims is executive director of the nonprofit National Park Partners.
