Kelsi Westfall

Kelsi Westfall grew up in Sequatchie County in “a very strict religion” — her family are Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Eight years ago, when she was 21, she told her family she is gay.

They couldn’t accept it — and she has been estranged from them ever since.

“Many of my songs are about coming out and the struggles I had because of that ... Many people don’t want to hear what I have to say about that,” she said breathing a sigh — but then, brightening, “but if it’s catchy.”

Her guitar playing is forceful and melodic — and many of her songs are “catchy.”
