Kelsi Westfall grew up in Sequatchie County in “a very strict religion”—her family are
Jehovah’s Witnesses. Eight years ago when she was 21 she told her family she is gay.
They couldn’t accept it and she has been estranged from them ever since. “Many of
my songs are about coming out and the struggles I had because of that…Many people
don’t want to hear what I have to say about that,” she said breathing a sigh, but then
brightening, “but if it’s catchy.” Her guitar playing is forceful and melodic and many
of her songs are “catchy.”
