DJ For An Hour
Be a DJ for an Hour!
Or give the experience as a unique gift!
WUTC is the only radio station in the Chattanooga area that gives you the chance to step behind the mic and host your very own radio show. With DJ for an Hour, you’ll plan, produce, and announce a one-to-two-hour program featuring your favorite music.
For a donation of $1,000 to WUTC, Chattanooga’s NPR station, you’ll get an unforgettable experience and an hour of airtime heard across Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina—and worldwide through our web stream and app.
And now, for an even more exclusive experience, you can choose to take over The Haley Solomon Show for an hour or two!
You can host the show yourself, or give it as a one-of-a-kind gift for the music lover in your life.
How it works:
- Eligibility: Hosts must be at least 18 years old. (Minors may participate if accompanied by a parent or guardian.)
- Your part: Bring your own FCC-compliant music.
- Our part: WUTC staff will guide you through the process, pre-record your session, edit it for air, and send you a CD or digital copy of your complete show. WUTC will post your episode on it's own page so you can easily share it with others.
Please note: WUTC may reschedule or replay your session at our discretion.

Frequently Asked Questions
I'm nervous about speaking on-air. Can you help?
Of course! Whether live in the studio or prerecorded, the host and producer will help you sound your best for your DJ for an Hour. A host will make it seem like a delightful conversation. All you need to do is bring your enthusiasm and uniqueness. And your music, obviously.
I want to be live! Can I?
Probably! The available time slots are specific to The Richard Winham Show reruns (usually Monday to Friday from 10am to noon, but you knew that) and The Haley Solomon Show (usually Monday to Thursday from 1 to 3 pm, but you knew that, too) so you might have to take time off to come spend time with us in the studio. It's totally worth it, in our humble opinion.
I can't physically make it in to WUTC to record my DJ for an Hour or need a different accommodation. How can I still do it?
Through the miracle of modern technology is how! We do this all the time when recording interviews with artists before they come to town, and we can do this for you, too. If you have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone that can run Zoom, we will use it to record the speaking parts of your show. We'll nail down the technical bits when we schedule your session. We can likely make other reasonable accommodations if needed. Just ask!
Can I select a host to record my DJ for an Hour show with me?
Yes, depending on the host's availability. Contact Clark Gibson above to help coordinate things with your favorite voice on WUTC.
What does "FCC-compliant music" mean?
Check out this link from the Federal Communications Commission: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/obscene-indecent-and-profane-broadcasts.
I have a playlist on Apple Music, Spotify, Qobuz, or another music streaming service I want to use for my DJ for an Hour. Will that work?
Absolutely!
I'm old school. Can I use physical media for my DJ for an Hour?
Brilliant! Yes, mostly. Bring your vinyl and CDs. It's harder for us to do cassette tapes and other media, so contact Clark Gibson above to see what's possible before you lug your crate of reel-to-reel tapes and wax cylinders into the studio. Some snap and crackle in a well loved LP is fine; records that skip and CDs that stutter should stay home.
Can I take pictures, share my DJ for an Hour session on social media, and so on?
Please do! Double check with the people who might be in the picture before doing so — radio folks don't always look as good as we sound — but we encourage sharing your DJ for an Hour adventure with friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, casual acquaintances, and your social media network. Link to your episode page and please tag WUTC in your posts as well!
Anything else I need to know?
DJ for an Hour is about you sharing your music with the world starting here in Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley, so we don't expect anything to pop up if we all stay true to that. Because WUTC 88.1 FM is a proud part of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a federal licensee of the public airwaves, we will not air stuff that violates the law or the university's policies, such as advertising and political speech.
Also, because of how music licensing works you probably cannot share your DJ for an Hour episode's digital file publicly, like on social media or the web. We're radio people, not lawyers. Ours tell us WUTC is licensed but that license does not extend to others. Sorry! But feel free to link to your episode page on WUTC.org where folks can stream it any time!
