HealthConnections: Why Pre-Existing Conditions Matter

Credit Carole Myers, UT College of Nursing

Conversations about health care and health policy are, unsurprisingly, characterized by divisions common to the current political climate. But one area of common ground is care for those with pre-existing conditions.

Before the Affordable Care Act in 2010, pre-existing conditions were a barrier to health insurance, and by extension, securing good medical care.

Some in Congress want to do away with the ACA entirely. Attorneys general in 20 states, including Tennesse, have sued the federal government to achieve the same end. But polling this year and last year shows strong public support for continuing the ACA-style protections, across party lines.

In this edition of HealthConnections, Dr. Carole Myers offers a closer look at pre-existing conditions, how they're covered, and what might happen if insurance policies change.
