Chattanooga's 'Lady Of The Stage' Talks About Children's Theater In Archival Tapes

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Historical Photograph Collection
Members of the University Players, an acting group at the University of Chattanooga, pose with theater professor Dorothy Hackett Ward, who is standing second from the right, in this 1966 photo.

Dorothy Hackett Ward was a theatrical force in Chattanooga for much of the 20th century, and she told many of her life stories to Norman Bradley in 1983 for the Chattanooga Public Library's oral history project. In these excerpts, Ward discusses outdoor children's performances in downtown Chattanooga and Alton Park. She was in her late 70's at the time of the interview.

Born in 1905, Ward graduated from the University of Chattanooga and went on to get a master's degree from Yale's school of drama. She was a professor at the University of Chattanooga.

Mary Helen Miller was a producer for Around and About from 2012 to 2013. She now works at the Chattanooga Times-Free Press.
