Hemlocks have been called “the redwoods of the East” and the “iconic evergreen of the Appalachians.”

But in the Chattanooga area and the Southeast, they are also in danger of being wiped out as a species by an insect.

One place caring for its hemlocks is the Lula Lake Land Trust, the 8,000-acre watershed on Lookout Mountain.

Cody Roney is executive director of Lula Lake Land Trust - and Patrick Kelly is its land manager.
