The United Way of Greater Chattanooga is changing how it spends money in the communities it serves.

Instead of funding the same 40 partners as in years past, the United Way opened grant applications to any 501(c)(3) nonprofit in its six-county area in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia - asking for local volunteers to help vet the applications.

Abby Garrison is vice president of community investments at United Way.
