Next month, the Scopes Festival returns to Dayton, Tennessee - from July 15th through 17th.

The annual gathering commemorates the July 1925 trial in Dayton of John Scopes, a high school teacher accused of violating a Tennessee law that barred the teaching of evolution in public schools.

The festival features a play where the actual trial took place at the Rhea County Courthouse.

This year’s play - by Gale Johnson - is “Monkey in the Middle: The Scopes Evolution Trial.”

Rick Dye is president of the Rhea Heritage Preservation Foundation.
