Tedeschi Trucks Band made a stop through the Scenic City on their “Deuces Wild” tour on November 4th, 2024. In the moments leading up to the show, a packed Memorial Auditorium crowd was creating a buzz that could be felt all the way from Cherry Street. When the band finally took the stage, a 12-piece band that almost resembled a traveling circus walked out to an impressive ovation from the audience.
Keyboardist Gabe Dixon kicked off the show with a flawless intro to The Beatles’ 1970 track, “I’ve Got a Feeling,” capturing the crowd’s eager excitement to see this incredible group of musicians perform. The unexpected cover kicked off four straight originals from the band, with “I Am the Moon” being their newest release played all night.
By the midway point of the show, Susan and Derek, the husband-and-wife duo leading the band, were in a flowlike state. Together, they direct a band with ease and professionalism, all while staying in the pocket and seemingly playing every note as if it were their last. Both of them play the guitar with a ferocity that almost knocks you prone. It would be a crime to call this band “Southern-rock” or slap the “jam-band” label on them. While they are southern folks and they do jam, this band is much more than that. They are steeped in the blues, and it shows when they covered Bobby “Blue” Bland so well that Mr. Bland himself would be impressed. The horn section can turn any song they play on its head and create an improvised jazz-fusion masterpiece. Whether they are showcasing their folky side, their blues-rock roots, or playing some of their favorite covers, they do it very well.
Tedeschi Trucks Band is based out of Jacksonville, Florida and has been touring the U.S. and abroad since 2010. They have eight albums under their belt, as well as a Grammy award for Best Blues Album of the Year.
