Free 'GoFest ' Celebration Expected to Draw Thousands to Zoo on 9/12

Caroline Johnson, one of GoFest's organizers, joins us to talk about the free annual event, which drew a crowd of more than eleven thousand people last year to the Chattanooga Zoo.  This year's crowd could be even bigger, so the city is offering a free shuttle from a parking lot at Engel Stadium.

FROM A MEDIA RELEASE:

Everyone is invited to a free day at the Chattanooga Zoo on Saturday, September 12, for the 11th Annual GoFest, which is a celebration of people of all abilities. The City of Chattanooga created the initiative to improve accessibility, to break down barriers and to raise disability awareness.

“Animal attractions and interactions abound, but breaking boundaries and increasing disability awareness are at the heart of GoFest,” said Mayor Andy Berke. “The festival helps make Chattanooga more accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability.”

From animal encounters at the Chattanooga Zoo to adaptive sports, GoFest offers active opportunities for families and festivalgoers of all backgrounds and abilities. This year, GoFest is excited to welcome honorary guest and Special Olympics Gold Medalist Nicole Gonzales, who will be demonstrating her winning shot put. The fun, free day also includes interactive exhibits like Touch-a-Truck and entertainment such as musical performances.

While the animals and lively activities are part of the appeal of GoFest, the mission is to raise awareness and connect people living with disabilities to needed services. Civic-minded groups, businesses and institutions as well as social service agencies will provide info on health resources, educational opportunities and assistive technology.
