Chattanooga Remembers 7/16 Anniversary With Memorial Event, Interfaith Service

Mary Helen Montgomery

A crowd gathered this morning at the riverfront in downtown Chattanooga to remember the deadly attack that happened in this city a year ago today.

More than 50 Navy sailors and Marines stood at attention on the pier at Ross’s Landing. Below, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke led a ceremony to remember the five servicemen who lost their lives on July 16, 2015.

People also came to the University of Chattanooga student center this afternoon for an interfaith service focusing on the importance of people of different faiths coming together.

Mark Siljander, a former U.S. Congressman from Michigan, spoke about his personal journey. He said he had been a bigoted Christian, but learned to reach out to Muslims with love and understanding.
