In the aftermath of a fatal school bus crash, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam is asking for a review of bus safety policies in the state. Gov. Haslam stood in front of a makeshift memorial—teddy bears and flowers—at Woodmore Elementary in Chattanooga.
On Monday, a school bus carrying more than thirty Woodmore students veered off a road and hit a tree, and the driver is now charged with five counts of vehicular homicide.
A parent claims the driver had a history of going too fast, and weeks ago, she’d informed the school, which contracts out bus service to Durham School Services, a private company. Neither the school’s principal nor Gov. Haslam would comment on that, but the Governor did say he’ll ask state education officials to review policies.
"How we hire drivers, to how we ensure safety of the equipment, to whether there’s seat belts on those buses," he said.
National Transportation Safety Board investigators plan to review video from the bus’s cameras.
