August Wilson wrote a collection of ten plays on the African-American experience in the last century.
Think of “Fences,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” or “Gem of the Ocean,” to name a few.
Each play represents a different decade of the 20th Century - and all but one of the plays in what is known as “The Century Cycle” is set where Wilson grew up: Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
Chattanooga Theatre Centre is committed to presenting the entire Cycle - and its next production from the collection, “The Piano Lesson,” premieres on Friday, June 9th during this year’s Chattanooga Festival of Black Arts and Ideas.
Alicia Haymer - based in Nashville - is the director of “The Piano Lesson” at CTC.

A word on Sunday’s performance of “The Piano Lesson,” which begins at 2:30 PM.
Afterward, around 4:30 PM, CTC will host a meet-and-greet with cast members and a lecture by Pedro E. Alvarado, education director of the August Wilson Society.
