In this corner of the Southeast, the crisis of food insecurity has gotten worse.

The Chattanooga Area Food Bank, which serves 20 counties in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, estimates 40,000 more residents - including 12,000 more children - have struggled with greater food insecurity in the past year.

They are among the 170,000 people in this region who don’t know where their next meal will come from.

Summer Simmons is chief development officer at the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
