Moccasin Bend was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 - to date, the only one here in Hamilton County.

In 2003, Federal legislation created the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District, adding the Bend to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

This fall, the Tennessee State Building Commission authorized the construction of a new mental health institute on the Bend, replacing the building on the Bend since the early 1960’s.

National Park Partners is the nonprofit whose mission is to - quote - “preserve, promote, and enhance the resources of Chickamauga + Chattanooga National Military Park.”

Tricia Mims is its executive director.

Two of its board members are Jay Mills - and Dr. Brooke Persons, a professional archeologist and a professor here on our campus, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
