Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - the holiday that honors the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.

That’s when Chattanooga will hold its annual Day of Service - with volunteers participating in community projects, followed by a parade.

On Friday, our campus - the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - will hold its annual MLK Day event - off campus for the first time, at the Walker Theatre.

Keynote speakers for that event: Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. King - and Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X.

Vanessa Jackson is program coordinator for the City of Chattanooga’s Department of Equity and Community Engagement.

Chris Stokes is assistant director of UTC’s Office of Multicultural Affairs.
