(Aired Tues 10/14/25)

Historic preservation and economic development may clash over a particular project - but it doesn’t always have to be that way.

Donovan Rypkema is an expert on historic preservation worldwide - and the author of “The Economics of Historic Preservation.”

He’s the president of Heritage Strategies International, and principal of PlaceEconomics - two firms in Washington, DC that focus on historic preservation and economics.

Last month, Donovan was the keynote speaker for the Chattanooga Preservation Awards, presented at The Read House by Preserve Chattanooga, the historic preservation nonprofit - and the Department of Interior Architecture and Design on our campus, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

I spoke with Donovan - and Todd Morgan, executive director of Preserve Chattanooga.
