(Aired Tues 10/28/25)

When what we now call the Arts-Based Collaborative here on our campus - the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - was formed in 1987, it was established as the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts - or SCEA.

The acronym encapsulates the goals that remain to this today for the Collaborative.

  • Support academic and social emotional learning needs through an arts-based approach to teaching and learning.
  • Cultivate a roster of visual and performing artists that connects our area's creative community with learning needs across multiple fields and disciplines.
  • Empower communities to collaborate from a place of strength to close opportunity gaps in the arts.
  • Activate pathways for ongoing professional learning opportunities in and through the arts.

Lee Harris, now a professor of music education here at UTC, joined this campus in 1995 - thirty years ago - as Music Director of what is today abc@utc.
