For Bart Elmore, there’s the business side of an environmental story - and the environmental side of a business story.
In his book “Citizen Coke,” he traces the rise of Coca-Cola, including Chattanooga’s role in its history.
In his book “Seed Money,” he examines Monsanto, which produced the herbicide Roundup and genetically modified seeds before the company was acquired by the German pharmaceutical firm Bayer in 2018.
Bart teaches environmental and business history at The Ohio State University in Columbus.
On Tuesday, he will speak here on our campus - the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - for a talk titled “Monsanto, GMOs, and the Future of Food” - starting at 5:30 PM in the Guerry Center Reading Room, free and open to the public.
His talk is presented by UTC’s Department of History, its College of Arts and Sciences, and its Environmental Studies Program - along with Food as a Verb and the Southeast Tennessee Young Farmers Coalition.
I spoke with Bart - and Dr. Mark Johnson, assistant professor of history here at UTC.
