In 1991, the Lookout Mountain Conservancy - then called the Lookout Mountain Protection Agency - became one of the very first land trusts here in Tennessee.

It started with three acres in St. Elmo - a small group banded together to protect it from development.

Today, the Conservancy protects more than 1,500 acres of land, including some of the most biologically diverse habitats in North America.

Its internship program is nationally known - and it offers privately-held land for public recreation and use, such as The Guild-Hardy Trail and Rockmont Park in St. Elmo.

This year is the 35th anniversary for the Lookout Mountain Conservancy - and on Saturday, it once again hosts Boulderfest, the annual climbing competition at Rockmont Park.

Dr. Robyn Carlton has served as the Conservancy’s president and CEO since 2008.

David Cook is director of communications and storytelling for the land trust.
