How We Should Look At The “Superfoods” We Eat

Every few years, we hear about a new “superfood” - dense with nutrients - that is supposed to supergood for our health.

Quinoa, blueberries, almonds, kale and acai have all had their time in the superfood spotlight.

Whatever the real health benefits these foods provide, there is also a boom-and-bust cycle to the buzz.

A new series of essays from researchers in various disciplines around the world examines the political, economic and social effects.

Emma McDonell is co-editor of “Critical Approaches to Superfoods,” along with Robert Wilk - and she is a visiting professor of anthropology on our campus, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Ray is the host and producer of Scenic Roots, Mondays - Thursdays at 3 PM on WUTC.
