Poll workers in Afghanistan are counting the ballots after the country voted Thursday in presidential elections. Attacks by Taliban militants killed more than 20 civilians and security personnel. Results are not expected until Saturday.

FDIC Deposit Insurance Fund Shrinks
The government fund that protects most bank deposits has fallen to $10.4 billion, from more than $45 billion last year, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation announced Thursday. The FDIC also said its list of "problem banks" grew to more than 400 institutions since the spring.

Mullen Calls For More Troops In Afghanistan
The nation's top military officer says more U.S. troops will likely be needed to win the war in Afghanistan. Adm. Mike Mullen's comments before the Senate Armed Services committee came as Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan underscored his opposition to additional forces, and Sen. John McCain, the committee's ranking Republican, shot back that any delay in sending troop reinforcements would have catastrophic consequences.

Watchdog Blames Geithner For AIG Bonuses
A government watchdog said Wednesday Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner dropped the ball on the massive bonuses at insurance giant AIG. Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general for the $700 billion financial bailout, told a House panel that "a failure of management" led to the bonuses at the firm that received billions in federal bailout money.
