Natasha Trethewey is a former Poet Laureate of the United States.

A Mississippi native, she’s the author of five poetry collections - including Native Guard, which won a Pulitzer Prize.

Natasha was born to a white father and a Black mother the year before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down laws banning interracial marriage - just one piece of her family history that influences her work.

This week, Natasha will speak here on our campus - the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - for the O’Dea Lecture in the Humanities series.

Her free public lecture - titled, “The Role of the Humanities in Our Personal and Civic Lives” is Thursday, starting at 6 PM, in the University Center’s Tennessee Room.

Dr. Linda Frost is Dean of UTC’s Honors College.

Dr. Greg O’Dea is professor emeritus of English - and Justin Wymer, assistant professor of English - here at UTC.
