There is horror that shocks, and then there is horror that lingers. Francisco Goya belongs to the second kind. Episode four, The Soundpainter descends into the Black Paintings, works created not for patrons, not for public display, but painted directly onto the walls of Goya’s home in the final years of his life. These were never meant to be seen. That’s what makes them unbearable and honest.
