"Scenic Roots" offers conversations that matter in the heart of Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley. From the mountains to the river, our conversations are rooted deep within every corner of our community - reflecting who we are, who we were and who we can become. We engage with the news that affects our community, behind and beyond the headlines. We build bridges that span from creators and innovators to storytellers and the outdoors. We focus on our challenges as many communities in one - as we celebrate what inspires us. We resonate with countless voices - in words and spaces, sounds and songs. We are "Scenic Roots."Ray Bassett hosts and produces "Scenic Roots" at WUTC.

For thirty years, “Together We Can” has provided scholarships to eligible public high school seniors here in the Chattanooga area - targeting college students who are first-generation or otherwise in need.

It is one of the most successful scholarship programs run by the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga - which created “Together We Can” in 1992 with the City of Chattanooga.

Today, due to rising tuition, the maximum award for a “Together We Can” scholarship is $5,000 per school year - and one recipient for this school year has just started attending our campus, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

A few days ago, I spoke with three Chattanooga natives also helped by “Together We Can.”

Wade Hinton is a lawyer and executive who has served as Chattanooga’s City Attorney and run for Mayor of Chattanooga - and now, he works with the Community Foundation on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Lenward Lee Brackin, Jr. - known as LB - is a local creative, logistics and customer service guru - and on this station, you might recognize him as one of the hosts on AMPLIFY by RISE Chattanooga, heard Wednesday nights at 9 PM here on WUTC.

Zora McKissic attends Howard University in Washington, DC - where she majors in history and minors in classical civilizations.

I spoke with Wade, LB and Zora as part of our ongoing series of conversations in partnership with the Community Foundation.
