What Is IBMA World of Bluegrass® — and Why Is It a Big Deal?
The International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) was founded in 1985 in Owensboro, Kentucky, to support bluegrass musicians — from working pros to hobbyists to lifelong fans. Since then, the organization has helped grow the genre through education, community-building, and connection.
In 1987, IBMA launched its signature event: IBMA World of Bluegrass®, a five-day celebration that blends a music industry conference, trade show, awards ceremony, and two-day outdoor music festival.
After years in Nashville and more than a decade in Raleigh, North Carolina, IBMA announced in 2024 that Chattanooga would host World of Bluegrass from 2025 through 2028. The move brings this major international event to a new region with deep Appalachian roots.
Here's what the week looks like:
- Sept. 16-18: The IBMA Business Conference kicks off at the Chattanooga Convention Center with panels, workshops, and networking for artists and industry professionals.
- Sept. 16–18: IBMA Bluegrass Ramble brings emerging acts to club stages around downtown.
- Sept. 18: The 36th Annual IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards takes place at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium.
- Sept. 19–20: IBMA Bluegrass Live!® transforms downtown into a full-scale music festival, with outdoor stages in Miller Park, Miller Plaza, and Patten Square.
The 2025 IBMA World of Bluegrass® is in partnership with Chattanooga Tourism Co. and Tennessee Department of Tourist Development.
