Theater for the New South Presents 'tick, tick… BOOM!'

From a media release:

Theater for the New South will present Jonathan Larson’s tick, tick… BOOM! May 9-10 and 15-18 in the Jim G. Lewis Studio Theater in the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine Street, Chattanooga, Tenn., 37403. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission cost is $20. UTC Theatre Company will be teaming up with TFNS to co-sponsor this event.

The final show in TFNS’ third season, tick, tick… BOOM! is the only other musical by the late Jonathan Larson. This autobiographical tale looks at the courage it takes to follow your dreams as you face the looming age of 30. Containing 14 songs, 10 characters, three actors and a band, this musical takes you on the playwright/composer's journey that led to the Broadway blockbuster, Rent.

“Having the opportunity to physicalize the intimate thoughts of Jonathan Larson, one of our generation’s strongest and most influential voices in musical theatre, has been an amazing experience,” says director Blake Harris. “This piece was originally written by Larson as a musical monologue that gave a snapshot of his life pre-Rent. Having died the night before the opening of Rent, Larson never witnessed the profound influence he had on musical theatre. This musical gives us a glimpse at the insecurities and woes that this artist, and artists of any kind, experience in the creative process.”

From rock music to intimate ballads, tick, tick… BOOM! runs the gamut in musical styles. Told through the eyes of Larson, this youthful, endearing and thoughtful story comes to life through storytelling and interactions with various people in his life. Set to the backdrop of New York City in 1990, this compelling story of personal discovery is presented in a streamlined and fast paced production.

The cast of tick, tick… BOOM! includes Jeffery Parker, Maggie McNulty and Terrance Wright, featuring the work of  musical director Curtis Jolley, costume designer Grace Holtz and lighting designer/technical director Alex Miller-Long. The show is produced by Matt Johnson. Promotional photography is provided by Cayce Gearrin, and the promotional image is by Garuda Screenprinting, Inc.

tick, tick...BOOM! was originally produced off-Broadway in June, 2001 by Victoria Leacock, Robyn Goodman, Dede Harris, Lorie Cowen Levy and beth Smith.  Book, Music and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson; David Auburn, Script Consultant; Vocal Arrangements and Orchestrations by Stephen Oremus. tick, tick...BOOM! is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).  All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI, 421 West 54th Street, New York, NY 10019 Phone: 212-541-4684 Fas: 212-397-4684 www.MTIshows.com.
