Back in March, the Chattanooga City Council designated Juneteenth as a day of commemoration known as “Juneteenth Independence Day.”

On Friday evening, 155 red, black and green Pan-African flags will be posted along the Walnut Street Bridge - the number representing each year since emancipation after the end of the Civil War in 1865.

Flag bearers - following the guidelines for COVID-19 - will begin gathering around 6:30 PM for a prayer walk that will run from the north to the south end of the bridge.

Ric Morris is founder and CEO of the Chattanooga Festival of Black Arts and Ideas.
