About two hours east of Chattanooga is Fort Armistead.
It’s a National Historic Landmark site about seven miles south of Tellico Plains in Coker Creek - a reminder of the final years of the Cherokee in the Eastern United States, and their forcible deportation during the Trail of Tears, in the 1800’s.
Next week, here in Chattanooga, Dr. Brett Riggs, a research archeologist at Western Carolina University, will talk about “Fort Armistead and the Cherokee Removal” as the first speaker for this fall’s Rita Vital Memorial Moccasin Bend Lecture Series, presented by National Park Partners.
His talk takes place on Monday, starting at 7 PM, at the Tennessee Aquarium’s River Journey Auditorium.
