(Aired Thu 4/14/26)

The oldest jazz club operating in New York City today is The Village Vanguard.

Fred Hersch was the first musician to play weeklong engagements at the Vanguard as a solo pianist.

Next week, the Grammy-nominated pianist and composer performs a solo piano concert here on our campus, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

It takes place on Tuesday, April 21st - starting at 7:30 PM - in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in UTC’s Fine Arts Center. Buy tickets here.

The concert is made possible by a gift from Ken Dryden, host of “Timeless Jazz” here on WUTC and our former colleague at the station - and his wife Nancy.

All proceeds from the concert benefit WUTC.

I spoke with Fred and Ken.
