Kids Design and Build Their Own Space on Glass Street

Glass House Collective

The Glass House Collective brought in neighborhood youth ages 12 and up to create their own space this summer through the Glass Street Design/Build Camp

Architect Kelly Fitzgerald and artist Rondell Crier began the project by brainstorming with the kids to find a theme for the outdoor space across the street from the Glass House Collective.  The space and some building supplies were donated by Community of Christ Church.  Other partners for this project include Our Neighbors, Lowe's, Global Green Lighting, Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and the City of Chattanooga.  Many of the design elements were created using discarded street lamps from the city.

The location for the youth project has concrete pads at various levels, once the foundation of a building.  The area was cleared and cleaned and the kids began the process of painting the concrete and preparing artistic elements that add bright colors to the space.  They chose a musical theme that includes a deck for a small stage and a huge drum for people in the community to express their own music.

Rabbit has been on the air at WUTC since 1993.
