The seed for the latest novel by a Chattanooga writer was planted when she encountered a real tombstone in East Tennessee with this inscription: “Leonard Bush’s Leg - 1923.”

Susan Gregg Gilmore is the author of “The Curious Calling of Leonard Bush” - published by Blair, a nonprofit press in Durham, North Carolina.

The novel begins with a funeral for the amputated leg of a fictional boy named Leonard, after he stepped on a piece of glass in a river in rural Tennessee in 1961.

From there, we learn about Leonard, his family - and his impact on their community.
