“Bombshell”: A PBS Documentary Shakes A Nuclear Narrative

Title graphic for “Bombshell.”
American Experience / PBS

In 1942, during World War II, a secret city was established here in East Tennessee.

Oak Ridge - powered by the electricity of the Tennessee Valley Authority - was created as part of the Manhattan Project that produced the world’s first atomic bombs, which the United States dropped on Japan in 1945.

“Bombshell” is a new documentary - premiering Tuesday night on PBS’ “American Experience” - that explores how the U.S. Government tried to minimize the human toll of the bombings, and a handful of reporters who sought to tell the full story.

Author and journalist Greg Mitchell is among those who appear in the documentary - which airs Tuesday at 9 PM on our public media partner WTCI PBS, also available on the PBS app.
