The National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature is an initiative of the Library of Congress, in partnership with Every Child a Reader.
Presented by Randy Patton, “Tufted Textiles Take the Floor” will examine the early history of carpet manufacturing in the Dalton area, focusing on the development of tufting machine technology, the changes in the national marketplace that facilitated the rise of tufted carpeting.
Randy Patton was born in Dalton, Georgia, and attended Dalton State College before receiving his BA from University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and his MA (1985) and PhD (1990) in History from the University Of Georgia. He is the author of Carpet Capital: The Rise of a New South Industry (1999); Shaw Industries: A History (2003); Working for Equality : The Narrative of Harry Hudson (2015); Lockheed, Atlanta, and the Struggle for Racial Integration (2019); and numerous scholarly articles. He currently holds the Shaw Industries Distinguished Chair in History at Kennesaw State University, where he has taught since 1993.

A free, three-part gardening series will begin on Monday, April 13, 2026 at 6:00 pm at the South Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4605 Redlands Dr, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
The first part on April 13th will focus on the basics of gardening and why attendees should grow their own food.
The second part on June 22 at 6 pm will focus on raised bed gardening.
The third part on July 13th at 6 pm will focus on fall gardening and extending the growing season.
The series will be facilitated by Gabriel McClover, chair of the Adventist Agricultural Association. A complimentary copy of the book “Every day Gardener” will be provided to participants who attend all three sessions of the gardening series, while supplies last.

Benjamin M. Friedman, distinguished economist, government advisor, academic administrator, and William Joseph Maier Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, will be delivering a lecture on the relationship between religion and the rise of capitalism. The author of seventeen books, Dr. Friedman's research focuses on macroeconomics and the origins and ongoing interplay between economic policy and moral philosophy and religion.
This lecture is sponsored by the LeRoy A. Martin Professorship of Religious Studies and the department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
